Ask Justin Alexander: How to Choose a Veil

Justin Alexander helps a bride pick the right veil for her Great Gatsby themed wedding

Q: I am going to be a Justin Alexander bride in style 8642 and I'm having a hard time figuring out what type of veil to accompany this gorgeous dress. I chose the dress because it reflected the vintage 20's Great Gatsby theme of our wedding. The dress is very detailed and I'm unsure what type of veil to pair it with. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

A: Style 8642 was inspired by the intricate detailing and beading found in vintage dresses, which makes it the perfect wedding dress for your Great Gatsby themed wedding! I love brides in cathedral veils; I feel it creates a classic and romantic bridal look. Since the dress is lavishly beaded you can pair it with a one-layer veil with a simple edge. You don't want the veil and dress to compete, there needs to be a balance where one compliments the other. If you want a bit more daring look you can wear a Juliet cap with delicate touches of beading to pick up the details on the dress. I put together a few veils and Juliet caps that caught my eye in the gallery below. The veil has to compliment the dress, hair, theme, and bride's personality, which is why finding one can be a little tricky. When shopping for your veil make sure to wear your hair in a similar style as you'll wear it on your wedding day. Also make sure to try on veils in your wedding dress, this will give you a better idea of what you'll look like the day of your wedding. And don't forget to take pictures! Sometimes pictures are a more effective way to judge your whole look rather than just looking at yourself in the mirror.

I'm not big into rules, each bride should choose the veil based on her look, shape, and comfort! While each bride is a little different and there are no strict rules when it comes to choosing a veil, I usually like to stick by these guidelines when helping brides.

·      For petite brides I prefer a one-layer veil that will help elongate them

·      Birdcages are great for short and vintage wedding gowns styles

·      Ball gown and mermaid dresses work well with fingertip length or cathedral length veils
