Ask Justin Alexander: How To Find a Dress For Petite Brides

This week Justin Alexander resolves a petite bride's struggle with finding a dress that fits properly:

Question: I'm 4'11” and I'm really worried I won't be able to find a dress to suit me because I'm short. I haven't tried any wedding dresses yet because I'm worried I will be disappointed in how I look. Can you suggest a style that would work for me? A lot of magazines suggest short wedding dresses but that's not the style that I want. - Sally

Answer: Sally, your wedding dress is the most important garment you will wear and I'll help you find one that fits and flatters you. Don't settle for a short wedding dress if that's not what you had envisioned yourself in.

What is holding you back from finding your dream dress isn't the fact that you are small in stature, it's that you have a higher waistline than most wedding dresses. This problem can easily be fixed and I'll share a few secrets with you in order to find a dress that will make you look and feel beautiful.

The secret to finding a dress that flatters your body type is choosing a dress that fits your natural waistline. Dress styles like 8502 and 8635 have shorter waistlines that will hit near your natural waist. These two ball gowns will frame your petite figure and give you an amazing silhouette on your wedding day. Style 8627 is an A-line dress that will also come in at your natural waist and help elongate you.

These three wedding dresses create an uninterrupted line that starts at the neckline and ends at the hemline. Having this continual line helps create the illusion of being taller without having to wear six-inch heels on your big day.

Look for wedding dresses with open necklines which will elongate your neck and help create height.

I'd love to help you narrow down your choices and find your dream wedding dress. Tell me how you see yourself walking down the aisle. In your mind are you wearing an all lace dress or a smooth silk creation?
